As a ritual in the game of life, Cathy got her heart broken. One would think she would learn from her past mistakes, but the heart is ever fickle and indomitable. She always pined for Mark even after she established herself in her career, and eventually married her current husband.
Her relationship with her husband was built on common ground, aspirations, and trust. He was very loving towards her, although Cathy always seemed to long for that which had made her vibrate to the core of her being and burn with passion, pain, and so much heartache that the line between the agony and the ecstasy seemed blurred.
Her deepest desires repressed, Cathy used her surplus energy to help her husband socially climb the ladder of success, and establish the contacts for the fundraising needed to launch his political career.
It took a long time of joint effort, hard work, sacrifices, and unwavering hope to get to this point - the presidential candidacy. Cathy admired and loved her husband; her most cherished dream was to see him succeed. He was a man of integrity, highly intelligent, and a visionary. She believed whole heartedly he would be the best candidate based on his highly successful expertise in the private business sector, his common sense, and his strong moral fiber.
Her husband was a charismatic speaker who played on the heart strings of his audience with his vision of a better way to do things, and evoking the good times which were yet to come. Cathy knew that he was destined to become president; she knew this in her heart. Those who listened to him speak also wanted to believe things would turn around the corner for the better, as chaotic as the world seemed with the signs of an imminent recession depicted daily on the front pages of the newspapers; this confirmed by the general consensus that business was slow in a lot of sectors.
Some dreams do come true, if they are meant to be. Cathy and her husband embraced joyfully and tearfully when it was announced he was the elected candidate for his party. They were just that close to their goal; it was happening! They made a great team; all they had worked tirelessly for decades was finally coming to fruition.
In the throng of people congratulating them at the event, Cathy came face to face with her past. He had the same dark hair, obviously tinged by now, his skin was marked by the passage of time, yet in essence it was the same handsome Mark. Her heart accelerated, and she had to keep herself in check not to run into his arms, like a dazed college girl.
Mark was able to maneuver himself to her side and congratulate her, he gave her his business card and told her to call him - they needed to talk. Cathy took the card in her hand as she made the mistake of looking deeply into Mark’s eyes. She was mesmerized all over again, and she seemed to vibrate at a higher energy level than she had for the last two decades. It was as if a reformed drug addict was in a room of people shooting up, the delirious ecstasy awaiting, was just at arms reach.
